Major Depressive Disorder

I am Major Depressive Disorder, the "common cold" of psychology. I tend to give people persistent feelings of sadness and take away their interest from the things they love. Not only do I affect how you feel, but I affect how you think and behave as well. I fill people with feelings and thoughts about how life really isn't worth living. If I'm lucky, I might be able to cause emotional and physical problems. I am not a weakness. I am a chronic illness. My only weaknesses are medication, psychological counseling, and treatment. I'm a tough cookie and it takes awhile to really get me down. There are a few different things that attract and cause me to show up. I can't seem to resist stress, discouragement, irritability, frustration, extreme sadness, suicidal thoughts, or slowed thinking.

  1. Depressed people can be treated with magnetic stimulation, which is a biomedical treatment. Magnetic stimulation penetrates to the brain's surface. The stimulation of the magnetic energy energizes the depressed patients' left frontal lobe, which can become inactive with depression.

  2. I think another form a treatment that could be seeked is a Cognitive Therapy, like Beck's & Cognitive-Behavioral Thearpy which is a psychotherapy method. I think doing things like sitting down and talking about reactions to certain events or keeping a diary and discussing how you feel after an event happens could help you relaize your emotions. In the end i think this therapy method could help you face tough situations and overcome bad thoughts.

  3. People who are depressed can be treated with Electroconvulsive Therapy which is a biomedical treatment. This method is proven to be the most accurate way to get rid of severe depression. It can cause slight short term memory loss, and a lot of people think it is barbaric even though there is no evidence of brain damage with it.
